Spade Racing’s Stars in Unusual Cars: Dale Jarrett

Dale Jarrett runs for a team funded by a mortgage scam (1987)

Join me throughout this year as I take a look at when some of the sport’s biggest stars drove some unusual cars! (Presented in no particular order).

Why? Despite his famous name, Dale Jarrett had a hard road to the Cup Series, running with various teams until he finally found a stable ride in 1987.  Unfortunately that ride was with Freedlander Motorsports.

How successful were they? Dale posted two top-ten finishes and wound up second in Rookie of the Year standings, ironically to Davey Allison.

What was the aftermath? Jarrett returned to running for various teams in 1988, eventually becoming a legend in the sport with Robert Yates Racing.  Freedlander Motorsports would collapse following team owner Eric Freedlander’s arrest as part of a $500 million mortgage scam.

Ranking on the Strange-O-Meter? 5 mustaches out of 10—it was one of many teams early in DJ’s career, but it seems to be mostly forgotten about.
