Spade Racing’s Stars in Unusual Cars: Daniel Suarez

Daniel Suarez runs for the Gaunt Brothers (2020)

Join me throughout this year as I take a look at when some of the sport’s biggest stars drove some unusual cars! (Presented in no particular order).

Why? Daniel Suarez showed flashes of talent in three Cup seasons, running two years with Joe Gibbs Racing followed by one season with Stewart-Haas Racing.  However, he found himself without a top- or mid-level ride and was forced to settle for the backmarker operation of Gaunt Brothers Racing.

How successful were they? 2020 was a wasted year for Suarez—after failing to qualify for the Daytona 500, he would fail to post a single top-ten, and only THREE top-twenties.

What was the aftermath? Suarez received a lifeline at the new Trackhouse Racing Team, posting his first Cup win in 2022.  The Gaunt Bros. returned to a part-time schedule in 2021 before closing down at the end of that year.

Ranking on the Strange-O-Meter? 9 Daniel’s Amigos out of 10—its been half a decade and I still can’t believe he couldn’t find a better ride.

Race Picks (the last season?), Uncle Max vs. The Points Leader: KANSAS

On the one hand, I’m not one to believe in curses, jinxes, or bad luck.  On the other hand, I hate talking about possible good news before it’s been confirmed.  So you can imagine how tough it is to go around work with everyone knowing I’m up for a promotion!

I think the first two interviews went pretty well, and it helps that I’ve been a loyal employee here for almost a decade.  Still, you never know who you’re up against—it could be someone with even MORE experience or, worse, the HR manager’s nephew.  Still, at least the anticipation gives me something to think about while I’m changing prices on a dreary Tuesday morning.

TRUCK SERIES (6 wins) Team EJP 175 (Saturday 12pm on FS1) LAYNE RIGGS—even better than Layne Murtaugh.

XFINITY SERIES (2 wins) Kansas Lottery 300 (Saturday 4pm ET on CW) AUSTIN HILL—plowing his way to victory in the heartland.

CUP SERIES Hollywood Casino 400 (Sunday 3pm ET on USA) Points Leader picks RYAN BLANEYFavorite (3 wins): JOEY LOGANO—give Penske credit, they know how to “flip the switch” in the playoffs.  Next Favorite (5 wins): WILLIAM BYRON—don’t count team Hendrick out.  Dark Horse (2 wins): JOSH BERRY—“although he has been mathematically eliminated, don’t count him out yet.”

Spade Racing Opens a 2025 Donruss Hobby Box: Pack 6 of 16

It’s back to new cards, with a “hobby box” of 2025 Donruss racing cards.  There’s sixteen packs, so join me as I go through each of them!

Pack 6 of 16: Nobody Knows, the Legend Grows, and a Loose Hose

First Look: To this day I find industrial sponsorships like Haas Tooling to be rather strange.  I can understand watching a race and deciding to get some beer or shop at a store, but not saying to yourself, “I really need some CNC services”.

To the Back: Jesse Love has shown he can compete in the lower series, and is slowly making his way up the ladder.  He’ll be the next RCR driver to get second-rate equipment compared to Austin Dillon by 2028.

Say What: “I use this tubing to get fresh Love’s-branded bottled water piped through my firesuit.”

Final Rating: 6 tight race cars out of 10

Spade Racing’s Stars in Unusual Cars: Michael Waltrip

Michael Waltrip drives the Bill Davis “hot rod” (2006)

Join me throughout this year as I take a look at when some of the sport’s biggest stars drove some unusual cars! (Presented in no particular order).

Michael Waltrip racing Ken Schrader--note the
lack of Dodge decals on the nose

Why? Michael Waltrip left a declining Dale Earnhardt Inc. to begin work on his own race team, which would field Toyotas in 2007.  However, this left him without a ride for 2006.  With sponsor Napa in tow, Waltrip signed up to drive for Bill Davis Racing for the ’06 season.

How successful were they? The year was a disaster, as Davis—who was also planning to switch to Toyota—was running Dodges without any factory support.  This resulted in Waltrip never referring to his car as a Dodge, typically choosing to call it the Napa “hot rod”.  Waltrip DNQ’d four times and was never a threat to win, failing to post a single top-ten all year long.

What was the aftermath? Bill Davis Racing continued its slow slide, shutting down after the 2008 season.  Waltrip, meanwhile, would endure a star-crossed run as a team owner, dogged by a pair of notorious cheating scandals.

Ranking on the Strange-O-Meter? 1 annoying commercial out of 10—I’m guessing their only regret was not being able to simply fast-forward through this year to get to the Toyota factory support.

Nascar Declines Mobil 1’s Request for 1-lap Race

This is a parody

As part of their promotional efforts, Mobil 1 will be sponsoring the annual 301 lap race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway today.  However, it has come to light that Nascar politely declined Mobil 1’s request for a 1-lap Race, tentatively called the Mobil 1.

“We can confirm that we received a request to change the race to a one lap event to match with Mobil 1’s name”, said Nascar spokesperson Julie Simpson.  “We politely informed them that, while we are amenable to slight adjustments to race lengths for sponsorship purposes, we couldn’t allow for a single lap race.  That would only give our TV partners time for two commercial breaks—three tops.”

The race, were it to proceed as the Mobil 1, would’ve taken approximately 40 seconds to complete, barring any overtime periods.

“We like to have our races go for a minimum of two and a half hours”, Simpson explained, “and a race less than a minute long would fall way short of that metric.  It’s the same reason why we turned down an offer from Baskin-Robbins in the early 2000’s—nobody wants a 31-mile race.”

Simpson would not confirm or deny rumors that Coca-Cola requested having a non-race called the Coke Zero.

Race Picks (the last season?), Uncle Max vs. The Points Leader: NEW HAMPSHIRE

There’s big news afoot, and I don’t just mean the Nascar playoffs.  I just found out that my current store (where I’m an assistant manager) is expanding to a NEW location about a half hour from my townhouse.  And guess what?

I’m in the running to be the new store’s manager!

Now don’t get me wrong—I realize that most people (myself included) didn’t grow up with dreams of retail management.  But with what I’ve been doing all these years as an assistant manager, this has always been the end goal.  So wish me luck—interviews start next week!

TRUCK SERIES (6 wins) Team EJP 175 (Saturday 12pm on FS1) LAYNE RIGGS—even better than Layne Murtaugh.

XFINITY SERIES (2 wins) off

CUP SERIES Mobil 1 301 (Sunday 2pm ET on USA) Points Leader picks DENNY HAMLINFavorite (3 wins): TYLER REDDICK—someone’s gonna “punch their ticket this weekend…  Next Favorite (5 wins): BUBBA WALLACE—…and I think it’ll be someone from 23XI.  Dark Horse (2 wins): ALEX BOWMAN—OR someone one week too late.
