Track “Facts”: Charlotte Roval

Nascar races on all sorts of tracks, from short to long, oval to road course, concrete to asphalt.  Here’s a weekly look at all the tracks of Nascar’s National Touring Series.

CHARLOTTE ROVAL

2.28 mile asphalt oval/road course hybrid

Debuted 2018

Lights?  Yes

Series: Cup, Xfinity

Nicknames: The Roval, The Roval(tm)

THREE FUN FACTS:

1. As part of Nascar’s migration to more road course circuits, Charlotte Motor Speedway became the first “Roval” (Road+Oval=Roval) to host a Cup Series race, doing so in 2018.  It was a great, fun idea…so of course schmucks online had to voice their displeasure with change.

2. CMS applied for a trademark on the term “Roval”, hence why the fall race has it as part of their name.  Its not like Bank of America introduced a new credit card called “Roval Banking” or something.

3. The 2020 Roval race was the first time Nascar Cup used grooved rain tires in a race.  The “wets” had been used previously in practice and in testing, most-notably while practicing in Japan for the old exhibition race at Suzuka where Wally Dallenbach Jr. went off-track.
