As part of their promotional efforts, Mobil 1 will be sponsoring the annual 301 lap race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway today. However, it has come to light that Nascar politely declined Mobil 1’s request for a 1-lap Race, tentatively called the Mobil 1.
“We can confirm that we received a request to change the race to a one lap event to match with Mobil 1’s name”, said Nascar spokesperson Julie Simpson. “We politely informed them that, while we are amenable to slight adjustments to race lengths for sponsorship purposes, we couldn’t allow for a single lap race. That would only give our TV partners time for two commercial breaks—three tops.”
The race, were it to proceed as the Mobil 1, would’ve taken approximately 40 seconds to complete, barring any overtime periods.
“We like to have our races go for a minimum of two and a half hours”, Simpson explained, “and a race less than a minute long would fall way short of that metric. It’s the same reason why we turned down an offer from Baskin-Robbins in the early 2000’s—nobody wants a 31-mile race.”
Simpson would not confirm or deny rumors that Coca-Cola requested having a non-race called the Coke Zero.
