Recently the Nascar world was rocked by the news that Stevie Reeves, spotter for Christopher Bell, had abruptly quit the team. Besides surprising fans that suddenly remembered Reeves for his mid-90’s Busch Series career, it brought up the rarely-seen phenomenon of spotters leaving their teams mid-season. Here’s a look back at some of the most-surprising moves in spotter history:
1975—Spotter CJ Bryant leaves Daytona in a huff, upon realizing that spotting hasn’t been invented yet.
1987—Numerous spotters are fired upon falling asleep during the Coca-Cola 600 as Kyle Petty laps the field in a rout. The good-old days, folks.
1992—Scandal rocks the spotter stand as Jason Dugan is immediately fired at Dover Downs for disparaging scrapple on a live radio scanner feed.
1997—Several spotters quit the Geoff Bodine Racing operation, a surprisingly LOW number considering that they were working with both Geoff Bodine and Tim Brewer.
2001—Melling Racing spotter Bernie Flynn quits the team after crew chief Chad Knaus insists that if Stacy Compton won, they would have to “wreck the spotter” post-race.
2011—Melvin Gary is let go from his spotting job at GoFAS Racing at Talladega after mistakenly calling Terry Labonte “Mike Skin—un, I mean Ken Schr—er, I mean Jason Wh—um, no, TJ Bel—ah, dang.”
