Why? We all know Alan Kulwicki as the do-it-all modern independent owner-driver who used his mechanical and driving abilities to will his car to the 1992 Cup championship. But it wasn’t always that way, as Kulwicki got his big break with Bill Terry’s car in 1985.
How successful were they? Although the small Terry Motorsports team rarely contended for wins, there were a few highlights, such as a fourth-place finish at Martinsville in 1986 and Rookie of the Year honors.
What was the aftermath? Kulwicki bought the team from Terry midway through the 1986 season, eventually building it into a championship-winning organization before tragically perishing in a plane crash in 1993.
Ranking on the Strange-O-Meter? 2 Zerex commercials out of 10—everybody has to start somewhere, and without much backing or experience, even Alan Kulwicki had to race for someone else in the beginning.
