Shortly after announcing the re-signing of both Michael McDowell and Todd Gilliland, thoughts turned to what Front Row Motorsports would do with developmental driver Zane Smith for 2024. Those questions were answered yesterday as Smith announced he would be joining the Big 12 Conference for the foreseeable future.
“I was hoping to be in a Cup car full-time in 2024, but when Rick Ware Racing was the only available ride, we started looking elsewhere”, Smith said at Big 12 headquarters in Irving, Texas. “The Big 12 offered the best combination of competition and compensation—not to mention the chance to play Oklahoma State every year.”
Smith is the latest big-name signing in the college “conference wars”, joining such high-profile defectors as Washington, Oregon, and Arizona State.
“Signing Zane Smith allows us to break into the lucrative markets of Huntington Beach California AND Mooresville North Carolina”, Big 12 Conference spokesman Steve Jay said. “While we usually look at Division I institutions, we were happy to get someone in the world of motorsports—we might see if any IndyCar teams want to see if they can hang with Kansas State in the fall.”
Smith will technically remain under contract to Front Row Motorsports during his time in the Big 12.
“Just because we only have two Charters doesn’t mean that Zane Smith isn’t in our future plans”, FRM director of marketing Karolina Hunter said from the team’s Mooresville race shop. “Once we have the right funding in place, we will have the ability to exercise an option to re-sign Zane to a Cup ride. And don’t say it won’t happen—heck, most everyone forgot that Chris Buescher was still under contract to Roush all those years.”
Smith is expected to start his Big 12 tenure on September 2nd with a game against Baylor.
