Track “Facts”: Richmond

Nascar races on all sorts of tracks, from short to long, oval to road course, concrete to asphalt.  Here’s a bi-weekly look at all the tracks of Nascar’s National Touring Series.

RICHMOND RACEWAY

0.75 mile asphalt D-shaped short track

Debuted (in current configuration) 1988

Lights?  Yes (but they don’t use them!)

Series: Cup, Xfinity, Trucks

Nicknames: The Action Track, Strawberry Hill, The Place to Race at Night

THREE FUN FACTS:

1. Richmond has seen its fair share of memorable moments in night races.  So why doesn’t it race at night anymore, especially for its second race date, typically in the heat of August?  Something something TV window something.

2. Before its current name (itself a throwback) the track was known as Richmond International Raceway, aka RIR (pronounced “Rurrrrr”).

3. Richmond Raceway is the state of Virginia’s largest professional sports complex, at least until the Washington Football Whatevers build a stadium in Northern Virginia to go 6-11 in every season.
