Join me as we take a look at every NASCAR Cup Rookie of the Year class from 1972 (the start of the modern era) through 2021, going from the worst to the first in terms of overall careers of each year’s rookie class.

2012

Winner: Stephen Leicht (Circle Sport).  Runner Up: Josh Wise (Front Row).  Aborted Attempts: Timmy Hill

How their careers turned out: The third straight year of terrible ROTY battles finished up with The Battle of the Backmarkers, as one-time Xfinity Series race winner Stephen Leicht—despite starting the season without a ride—beat out future Dogecoin driver Josh Wise.  These things happen when there simply aren’t any open Cup rides, folks.

“Fun” “Fact” about the winner: Stephen Leicht made such an impression on the Cup Series that he didn’t make another start there until 2017.  Yeah.
