NASCAR ROTY RANKINGS 2006: Ranking the Rookie of the Year Classes Through the Years

Denny Hamlin
Join me as we take a look at every NASCAR Cup Rookie of the Year class from 1972 (the start of the modern era) through 2021, going from the worst to the first in terms of overall careers of each year’s rookie class.

2006

Winner: Denny Hamlin (JGR).  Runners Up: Clint Bowyer (RCR), Martin Truex Jr., Reed Sorenson (Ganassi), J. J. Yeley (JGR), David Stremme (Ganassi).  Aborted Attempts: Brent Sherman

How their careers turned out: This class really runs the gamut down the line of Nascar career outcomes, doesn’t it?  We have a champion (Truex), a near-champion (Hamlin), a consistent race-winner (Bowyer), a race win contender (Sorenson), a disappointment (Yeley), and a guy who, somehow, ran hundreds of national touring series races without a single win (Stremme).

“Fun” “Fact” about the winner: Denny  Hamlin has been called “The Modern Mark Martin”, in that he’s come ever-so-close to winning a championship multiple times, but ironically its Mark who has a more-authentic love for hip-hop.

Ranking: #5 out of 50
