Musically Declined: Nascar Runnin’ Wide Open—The Fastest Horse In A One Horse Town

In 1995 Nascar was starting to get hot.  Jeff Gordon was on his way to his first Cup championship, TV ratings were on the rise, and for the first time ever, stock car racing was somewhat cool.  So what better way to celebrate the sport’s success than with an album of bland middle-of-the-road country music?

The Song: The Fastest Horse In A One Horse Town

The Star: Billy Ray Cyrus

The Clip: https://youtu.be/oAviq37fBoY?si=1ll5-7DPm-045zKe

The Review: The song itself is ok enough, but the main conceit of the lyrics confuses me—if you want to be the fastest horse, that’s great, but if you’re in a one-horse town, that means there’s zero competition.  HUH?  Reminds me a bit of these guys who use family money to rise through the weekly series, then run out of cash in Xfinity and whine they’re just like us.

The Verdict: As someone who grew up with “Achy Breaky Heart”, I could without any more Billy Ray in my life, but this is ok.
